Workshop on Tense and Aspect in Analytic Forms

28-29 May, 2026

Room 55.410, Tànger building

Meeting description:

Tense and Aspect are fundamental categories in the architecture of grammar. Both situate eventualities in time, but they do so in different ways: tense anchors the time of the event deictically to the time of the utterance, yielding present, past, or future distinctions, either directly or through the mediation of a reference time (Comrie 1985, Bybee 1992). Aspect, on the other hand, refers to the internal temporal constituency of the event, encoding distinctions such as perfective, imperfective, and ingressive, among others (Vendler 1957, Verkuyl 1972, Comrie 1976, Dowty 1979, Smith 1991).

In addition to the inflectional encoding on the verb of Tense and Aspect, well attested cross-linguistically, another common strategy consists in analytic constructions, which combine auxiliary verbs, particles, or other functional elements with lexical verbs. This variation occurs not only cross-linguistically, but also language-internally, where some Tense/Aspect distinctions may be expressed synthetically and others analytically or periphrastically.

This workshop specifically aims to explore the morphosyntactic and semantic properties of analytic Tense and Aspect constructions from theoretical, descriptive, and comparative perspectives. In particular, it seeks to offer new insights into the cross-linguistic expression of temporal and aspectual meanings in analytic constructions, also considering how Tense and Aspect are semantically and syntactically intertwined with each other across languages.

We invite contributions on any area regarding the syntactic and semantic dimensions of Tense and Aspect, including but not limited to the following lines:
a) How are aspectual periphrases syntactically and semantically encoded (resultatives, progressives…)?
b) What is the contribution of auxiliaries and light verbs in compound tenses?
c) What are the semantic and/or morpho-syntactic factors regulating the distribution of synthetic vs analytic Tense/Aspect constructions?
d) How do modality- or Mood-related interpretations of Tense arise (e.g, “fake/repurposed tenses” in counterfactuals)?
e) What are the semantic/pragmatic implications of super-compound tenses?

Poblenou Campus - Universitat Pompeu Fabra - Barcelona

The 24th International Conference on Research in Advertising (ICORIA) will be hosted by Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF) in Barcelona, Spain. Widely regarded as one of Europe’s most dynamic and cosmopolitan cities, Barcelona combines a rich cultural heritage with a thriving creative scene and a strong orientation toward innovation. It is also an international hub for business, technology, and health research, making it an inspiring setting for academic exchange.

Building on UPF’s strong interdisciplinary tradition and commitment to advancing knowledge with societal relevance, the 2026 conference theme “Communicating Consumer Health and Wellbeing in the Digital Age” reflects one of the most pressing challenges and opportunities for advertising and communication research today. In a world where digital technologies shape how people access, interpret, and act upon information, health and wellbeing have become central domains in which advertising and communication play transformative roles. Consumers increasingly navigate complex
environments of commercial, social, and public health messages—ranging from branddriven wellness initiatives to government campaigns addressing prevention, risk, and sustainability. Understanding how communication strategies influence health-related attitudes, decisions, and behaviors is critical for both theory development and societal progress.

The theme emphasizes the role of advertising and communication research in contributing to healthier societies. It calls for insights into how digital platforms, data-driven personalization, social media, and immersive technologies reshape consumer engagement with health and wellbeing. It also highlights the ethical responsibilities of advertisers and researchers in addressing issues such as misinformation, equity of access, vulnerable populations, and the balance between commercial and public interests.

In this context, impact refers not only to advancing scholarly debates but also to improving individual and collective wellbeing. Research can generate conceptual insights into how health and wellbeing are communicated, instrumental outcomes that inform effective interventions, cultural reflections that challenge existing norms, and enhanced connectivity between academia, practitioners, and policymakers.

Option 1: Historical Heart of Barcelona Itinerary

27/06/2024 07.00 pm

Total Duration: Approx. 1 hour and 45 minutes.
The Route: A walk covering 2.3 km (approx. 30 minutes of actual walking time, leaving 75 minutes for sightseeing).

1. After Meeting at the busy Portal of the Angel, the former entrance to the medieval city of Barcelona, we’ll walk toward Plaça de la Vila de Madrid to admire the Roman Tombs.
There we will view an excavated Roman necropolis from the 1st to 3rd centuries AD. The tombs are visible from the street level, showing how the ancient Romans buried their dead outside the city walls.

2. Plaça del Pi & Basílica de Santa Maria del Pi
This is a charming square often home to local artisan markets. We’ll stand before the Basílica de Santa Maria del Pi, a 14th-century Gothic church famous for its massive rose window, one of the largest in the world.

3. El Call (The Jewish Quarter) & Roman Gate
Enter the narrow, winding streets of El Call, the city's medieval Jewish quarter. You can see the Sinagoga Major de Barcelona, considered one of the oldest synagogues in Europe. Nearby at Plaça Nova (next to the Cathedral), look for the two circular towers that formed part of the original Roman Gate to the city.

4. Barcelona Cathedral & Plaça de Sant Jaume
A short walk leads to Plaça de Sant Jaume, the political heart of the city, flanked by the Palau de la Generalitat. Pass by the Catedral de (The Cathedral of the Holy Cross and Saint Eulalia). Observe the stunning Gothic facade and the gargoyles from the outside.

5. Finish: Palau de la Música Catalana
Head toward Via Laietana and cross into the Sant Pere neighborhood to finish at the Palau de la Música. This masterpiece by Lluís Domènech i Montaner is a colorful explosion of ceramic, glass, and iron, serving as a triumphant end to your historical stroll.

Option 2: Gaudí and the Essence of Catalan Modernism Itinerary

27/06/2024 07.00 pm

Total Duration: Approx. 1 hour and 45 minutes.
The Route: A downhill walk covering 2.3 km (approx. 30 minutes of actual walking time, leaving 75 minutes for sightseeing).

1. Start: Casa Fuster (Jardinets de Gràcia)
Begin at the highest point of Passeig de Gràcia. Designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner, this building is celebrated for its sober elegance and serves as the "grand finale" to the boulevard.
Have a look at the intricate capitals on the columns and the luminous white marble facade.

2. Downward to Casa Milà (La Pedrera)
Estimated observation time: 20 minutes.
Walk down the street for about 5 minutes. Gaudí’s La Pedrera will captivate you with its undulating stone forms and wrought-iron balconies.
Admire the organic shapes that mimic the movement of the sea and the lack of straight lines.

3. The "Block of Discord" (Mansana de la Discòrdia)
Estimated observation time: 40 minutes.
Continuing downhill, you will reach the famous block where three architectural masters competed for prestige:

Casa Batlló: Gaudí’s explosion of color and fantasy, featuring a roof that resembles the iridescent scales of a dragon’s back.

Casa Amatller: Located right next door, this building by Puig i Cadafalch blends Neo-Gothic style with Flemish influences (look at the stepped gables).

Casa Lleó i Morera: A bit further down, another masterpiece by Domènech i Montaner boasting exuberant floral decorations and refined sculptures.

4. Finish: Palau de la Música Catalana
End your journey in front of this breathtaking explosion of mosaics, brick, and stained glass.
This concert hall is a UNESCO World Heritage site and perhaps the most complete example of the symbolic power of Catalan Modernism.

Both tours end at the Palau de la Música.

DATA FOR POLICY 2026

DATA FOR POLICY 2026

Data For Policy, September 8th to 10th, 2026

The tenth edition of the conference will focus on the reshaping effects of AI in governance and decision making. This year has witnessed a significant paradigm shift, sparking increased interest in and concern regarding AI governance. The development of AI and data infrastructure has become essential amid the 'AI War' between the United States and China, the hybrid conflicts in Europe, and the deployment of military technologies in the Middle East. Strategic investments now prioritize access to frontier technologies, the securing of critical minerals, energy production, and key locations for water supply and cooling. AI is challenging not only global economies but also political systems. We have entered an era where AI influences geopolitics, often at the expense of fundamental rights and values.

The theme “Governance of/with AI” addresses the diverse global perspectives on this evolving technology. As AI continues to transform, it presents both unprecedented opportunities and complex challenges; furthermore, emerging developments such as quantum computing heighten existing uncertainties.

This theme calls for a responsible and ethical societal response while fostering debate across multiple disciplines. We invite reflections and evidence-based research that explore and contest these views. Ranging from geopolitical promises to large-scale investments, social consequences, and legal frameworks, AI has become a truly transdisciplinary field. We welcome contributions from engineering, the humanities, and the social sciences that offer transformative perspectives on our collective future.

Green colonialism and green sacrifice: critical perspectives on the politics of green transitions

Since the launching of the European Green Deal and US discussions for a Green New Deal in 2019, the green transition agenda has taken decisive momentum. With the EU pledging to mobilise at least €1 trillion for its Green Deal, and solar and wind amounting to some 40% of new energy added globally (2023), countries such as Spain now claim that they produce almost 60% of their electricity through renewable sources.

Nevertheless, critical analyses have drawn attention to the colonial dimensions of green transitions. They have pointed out how the large-scale extraction of ‘transition minerals’ (Lang et al, 2024) and the installation of industrial-scale renewable energy production facilities (Hamouchene, 2023) in the global South for the benefit of decarbonising global North economies are a manifestation of green colonialism. And they have also highlighted links between green colonialism and the capitalist dimensions of the decarbonisation consensus that drives green transition (Bringel and Svampa, 2023), as well as violent dimensions of renewable energy development that reveal troubling continuities with historical colonial projects (Dunlap, 2017).

Parallel to that, a literature that can be related to the idea of green sacrifice (Zografos and Robbins, 2020) has analysed adverse effects of the green energy transition by studying sacrifices as foregone assets (e.g. farmland), as sacrifice zones (Brock et al., 2021), and to a lesser extend by looking at sacrifice as a political practice (van Meer and Zografos, 2024).

As new experiences of green sacrifice emerge with communities from the Lithium Triangle in South America, to central Morocco and the Democratic Republic of Congo in Africa, and Sapmi in Northern Europe encountering the green transition in their territories, we want to advance conversation between those two themes. Building on recent contributions that engage sacrifice zone-making and colonialism in the context of energy transitions (Sánchez and Mataran, 2023) and political ecologies of the Green New Deal (Andreucci et al, in press), we invite contributions that critically explore links between green colonialism and green sacrifice in the context of the green transition.

Our aim is to advance those conversations through a mini-conference that will bring together a small number of participants in a format that will combine parallel sessions with roundtables and workshop-type of activities to allow for intense interaction, and so help discuss and advance current thinking, networks and collaborations.

We are delighted to announce that the keynote for the conference will be given by Prof Miriam Lang of the Universidad Andina Simón Bolívar, Ecuador.

We invite long abstracts of maximum 800 words on the following topics (this list is not exclusive, we accept proposals also on other topics related to green colonialism and green sacrifice):

Compassionate Futures: Dismantling the Dynamics of Power and Violence in Human-Animal Relationships is a critical exploration of the multifaceted power structures that govern human-animal interactions and the ethical imperative to reimagine these relationships with compassion at the forefront. This conference will bring together scholars, professionals, and advocates from diverse fields to engage in a thorough examination of the social, political, economic, and cultural forces that continue to perpetuate the exploitation, oppression, and marginalisation of non-human animals (NHA hereafter).

The event aims to dissect the mechanisms by which humans assert dominance over NHA, from legal frameworks and economic interests to cultural narratives and institutional practices that sustain speciesism. In analysing these dynamics, we will interrogate how power operates to maintain the objectification and instrumentalization of NHA, often for human benefit, while reflecting on alternative pathways rooted in justice, empathy, and ethical responsibility.

Central to this conference is the exploration of how to distinguish between genuine ethical progress and superficial humane-washing. Humane-washing, often used to placate public concern, obscures the persistence of exploitative practices while allowing industries and institutions to maintain business as usual under the guise of reform. The conference will critically engage with the strategies and narratives that perpetuate this deception and, importantly, will highlight pathways to promote authentic, transformative change in how we relate to and treat NHA.

The conference also seeks to foster interdisciplinary dialogue on the intersectionality of animal oppression with other forms of violence and discrimination, such as racism, sexism, and environmental degradation, highlighting the importance of solidarity across social justice movements. By dismantling the dynamics of power and violence that structure human-animal relationships, Compassionate Futures envisions a world where NHA are recognized not as objects, but as subjects deserving of respect, dignity, and compassion.

Ultimately, this event invites participants to reflect, collaborate, and contribute to the creation of a more just and compassionate future for all beings, with a particular focus on identifying and overcoming the many strategies that simulate progress while obstructing real and transformative change.

SUBJECT

Humans have adapted to live in a constantly changing chemical environment, but the rapid increase in the creation of new chemicals and materials over the last century has raised serious environmental and public health challenges. Reports about the ecological impact of microplastics in our oceans and rivers, or the presence of plastics in our bodies, frequently appear in the news. However, scientific understanding of the risks remains limited.

While there is growing concern about microplastic pollution and its effects on ecosystems and human health, much is still unknown. Most of the plastic waste we’ve produced—around 8.3 billion tons since mass production began—ends up in landfills, and global plastic production is expected to increase dramatically by 2050. The qualities that make plastics useful, like durability, also make them persist in the environment, breaking down into microplastics that can enter food, water, and air.

Despite concerns, the risks of microplastics to human health are not well understood. Media reports have exaggerated claims, suggesting microplastics are causing widespread harm without sufficient evidence. While there are toxic chemicals associated with plastics, such as additives identified by the United Nations as hazardous, the focus on microplastic particles may overshadow these concerns.
Science, Technology, Humanity, and the Earth. 11th ESHS Conference, 4-7 September 2024

The Eleventh Conference of the European Society for the History of Science (ESHS) will take place in Barcelona (Spain), from 4 to 7 September 2024. The theme will be Science, Technology, Humanity, and the Earth. Science is the primary means by which mankind understands, represents and intervenes in the world. Humanity is facing challenges that can threaten its future and the future of the planet where it lives. As historians of science, we are committed to understand how epidemics, wars and climate change are connected. We invite the community of historians of science, in Europe and elsewhere, to look at the object of their historical research with a view to the great challenges that humanity has been facing both nowadays and throughout its history. The aim is to distance the conference from a specific methodological approach, and to establish a dialogue between different historiographies, perspectives and topics.

Barcelona is a leading centre for the study of history of science in Spain with a number of research groups working in its universities and the CSIC, the Spanish National Research Council. There is a large community of historians of science, with some 300 members of the Catalan Society for the History of Science and Technology. A specific Master's programme in History of Science: Science, History and Society is offered at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and the Universitat de Barcelona and there is a specific PhD programme in History of Science at UAB.

CORE Project 2024 Workshop

Information-theoretic perspectives on referring expression choice

18-19 April 2024

Room 55.309. Poblenou Campus, Universitat Pompeu Fabra

Language offers a rich set of lexical and syntactic options for reference, reflecting the different ways we can choose to identify, describe, categorize, and differentiate the entities and events we talk about. For example, in any given context, a speaker can choose between a more or less specific the dog, the spotted dog, the Dalmatian), or between expressions that convey complementary information about the referent (the woman, the skier). A well-established line of research highlights the role of efficiency in referring expression choice. But what makes a referring expression “efficient”? Efficiency in communication has frequently characterized in terms of an informativity/effort trade-off, with informativity operationalized in terms of inference, and effort, in terms of cognitive or physical cost (Horn 1984, Levshina 2021). However, there is also evidence that other factors such as the salience of visual features (e.g., color, Rubio-Fernández 2016) or the prototypicality of an entity as an exemplar of a category (see, e.g., Degen, et al. 2020) can lead speakers to use expressions that are, strictly speaking, overinformative in the narrowest sense of the term. Efficiency can also be examined at the level of the whole system; for instance, Brochhagen and Boleda (2022) argue that the informativity/effort trade-off helps explain cross-linguistic patterns in colexification, or how meanings are organized in the lexicon.

The goal of this workshop, supported by the Spanish AEI-funded CORE project (“COntextual effects in the choice of Referring Expressions for visually presented entities”, PID2020-112602GB-I00), is to dig deeper into what makes a linguistic expression “efficient”, considering factors such as:

Cognitive biases that influence the potential for rapid/efficient discrimination.

Potential for exploiting inferences due to choice of one expression vs. another.

Information load a referring expression has to bear given extralinguistic sources of information in the context, especially visual information.

Postcolonialisme, Neocolonialisme, Gènere i Estudis Negroafricans

nostres estudiants.

2nd Summer School of Computational and Experimental Economics

The 2nd Summer School of Computational and Experimental Economics

Graduate students and young faculty interested in computational and experimental economics are invited to attend this intensive 7-day summer school (which will include the two-day Workshop on Computational and Experimental Economics on June 14-15, 2023).

The summer school will be held from June 11 to June 17 at Beslab of Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Spain.

Goal: The goal of the summer school is to develop a foundation for using computational models and simulations to complement and/or explain results from human subject experiments. In particular, throughout the curriculum, students will learn how to implement a variety of agent-based models that have been successful in capturing regularities observed in the experimental and field data. In addition, the summer school will include a two-day workshop on computational and experimental economics which will include presentations by the leading researchers who are interested in experimental and computational economics.

Schedule Outline: The summer school coursework will begin with an overview of the literature at the intersection of experimental/behavioral economics and computational economics (as highlighted for example by The Handbook of Computational Economics, Heterogenous Agents, edited by Cars Hommes, Blake LeBaron, Volume 4, 2018) and continue with specific implementations of recent models including reinforcement learning, evolutionary learning, and belief learning. In addition, students will compare the performance of the agent-based approach to computational approaches that do not relax the assumptions of perfect rationality and information (e.g., dynamic programming).

The summer school consists of 5 days of instruction with a typical day including:

Two 90-minute lecture by the faculty

90 minutes programming lecture

90-minute hands-on group sessions in which students work to implement the computational model or participate in the experiment

The last day will include student-groups presenting proposals for a project and getting comments from the faculty. A tentative schedule is provided below.

Preparation: In order to ensure productive interaction during the summer school, all students will be required to complete a Python tutoriall and submit a set of exercises prior to arrival. In addition, because the summer school will include completion of a number of hand-on programming activities, students are encouraged to bring their own laptop computers with the necessary software installed.

In addition to the tutorial, students will be provided with a set of example programs that will be discussed during the lectures. The expectation is that students will study and execute these programs prior to arrival.
