Ciber 360: Ataque, Inteligencia, Impacto y Evidencia.

Engineering the Planetary Wellbeing
TEDx talk at UPFPoblenou
1. Description of the project & Goal
Planetary Wellbeing. With all the technological advancements and cultural changes, global society is
facing major challenges affecting the wellbeing of humans, animals and the planet itself.
The aim of this project is to organize a TED talk at UPF's campus to expose some of the main
challenges and solutions the planet is, or will be, facing in the near future and that can be related to
the biomedical engineering field. The talks will be centered around: the future of the planet, the
alimentation, the medicine, the housing and the need to grow a new mentality.
We want to create a space where different professionals can share their recent and most interesting
thoughts and discoveries.
The health of the planet is a recent growing topic that has lots of potential, and biomedical
engineering tools have a great power to contribute to the good path.
More than two years into the COVID-19 pandemic, and beyond the foolish expectations of a baby boom uttered by some, the figures of the drop in fertility are in and can be analysed for their causal mechanisms and we can speculate over their long-term effects.

Perspectives on male reproductive health

Traditionally, the burden of fecundity has fallen in women, as well as the blame when a couple is infertile. Although it is well established now that close that 50% of the cases of infertility are male-related and that about 7% of men may have trouble conceiving, some myths still persist in an area traditionally associated with virility. On the other hand, recurrent media reports on toxic effects on sperm production and viability may have contributed to generate anxiety about declining male fertility. In this symposium, we will discuss male reproductive health from multiple perspectives, from basic research on spermatogenesis to the social and psychological impact of male infertility.

Despite the climate crisis emergency, humans are still not acting with the urgency events demand. Climate inaction – i.e., the absence of effective reaction to mitigate or stop contributing to global warming – is a recurrent, historical and very present reality. We are nowhere near fulfilling the Paris agreement. By some measures, Paris could be judged as a failure: emissions actually rose in 2019 compared to when the agreement was signed in 2015. And although the worldwide pandemic in 2020 produced a relevant fall in carbon output due to coronavirus lockdowns, the data also revealed an uncomfortable truth: even when transport and commerce are dramatically reduced, the majority of emissions remain intact. Far greater systemic change is needed.

We now know that the main barrier to action on environmental issues is a combination of vested (political and economic) interests and human reluctance to change habits. Obstacles to addressing humans’ pollution of the Earth have actually been so successful that a rhetoric of adaptation has emerged to replace one of mitigation. While mitigation addresses the root causes of climate change – focusing on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and stopping the destruction of carbon storages (like rainforests) – adaptation merely seeks to lower the risks posed by the consequences of climatic changes, without addressing the causes of the problem. Overall, the failure of mitigation rhetoric and the rise in the adaptive form represent a major success not in the spheres of science, politics or economics, but rather in that of strategic communication, public relations and public affairs, with interest groups playing or attempting to play a major role in this respect.

Having children in the 21st century is frayed with many unknowns and conditions, but it is also open to new possibilities. Many more people have the opportunity to become parents, but many choose not to (or is it that they are not allowed to?). In this one-day symposium, we want to open a discussion on what it means to be a parent, in a time when non-genetic parenthood can easily be revealed.

Would you like to exploit your research? Discover the value of Patents

The University is a fertile environment for findings that can contribute to the progress of Society. To achieve this impact, however, it is necessary to take into consideration the legal protection of the results of the research activity. In order to offer useful information about Patents, the main legal tool to protect Inventions, the Innovation Unit - UPF Business Shuttle is offering the seminar 'Would you like to exploit your research? Discover the value of patents'.

In the session, a European Patent Attorney will explain what Patents are, which advantages do they offer compared to other types of protection, and in what cases they can be used. In addition, a researcher will explain his experience in protecting the results of his research at the University.

The session is open to the entire university community, but especially addressed to UPF researchers and Phd students.
