08:00 - 09:00Barcelona: Study Abroad and the City: Round table about Barcelona as a study abroad destination: where do we come from and where are we going?
Barcelona is a global hub of creativity, design, business and development; but it is also a place with a number of highly ranked universities offering good quality academic opportunities for international students. Around 15 years ago, Barcelona erupted in the European study abroad context and grew dramatically as one of the most popular destinations to study. As a result, new programs, services challenges and opportunities emerged, impacting not only host campuses, but also the city as a whole. The interest of US universities, students and providers for studying in the city coincided with the efforts of local institutions to internationalize their campuses through the presence of students from abroad.
After framing the context of the last year’s study abroad history in Barcelona, panelists will debate around topics such as: What are the challenges faced by international educators to develop high quality academic programs in such a popular destination? How can a city like Barcelona brand herself to stand out as an excellent destination to study? What is the social and economic impact of a growing number of international students in the city and its citizens? How can we, international educators, design programs that respect and reflect the depth and breadth of a multicultural and multilingual host society? How can home institutions balance their student’s demand with their own choices for partnerships in Europe?
